Fumigation

The superficial fumigation of oak, but also of other acidic woods, has been known for a long time. However, in order to be able to fumigate the cores of all standard thicknesses of lumber, a special process had to be developed. At M&W we use special chambers as well as vacuum and overpressure processes, utilising highly purified ammonia, to guarantee that the cores of all lumber types are fumigated. Through the subsequent drying and neutralisation phase, the fumigated lumber is vacuum-dried to a timber humidity of 8-12%, on the one hand, and on the other hand excess ammonia is removed, ensuring that the veneers and lumber can be processed immediately. The ammonia that has been removed is converted into ammonium sulphate using sulphuric acid and water, and this ammonium sulphate is used as liquid fertiliser in the agricultural sector. Since our process means that every acid molecule contained in the wood forms a bond with an ammonia base, this leads to incomparable colour stability and brilliance in veneers as well as in lumber.
